Tribute to Rwandan genocide victims
The Chairman of the National Holocaust Centre this week paid tribute to the estimated one million victims of the Rwandan genocide to mark the 20th anniversary of the beginning of a devastating 100-day slaughter.
It is thought 1,000,050 Rwandans perished in three months of machete and gunfire attacks, mostly aimed at the minority Tutsi population by extremist Hutus.
Henry Grunwald said: “I’ve been representing the National Holocaust Centre at Kwibuka 20, the 20th anniversary commemoration of the genocide. The world let Rwanda down. This was a genocide that could, and should, have been prevented.
“As a Jew whose father’s family was murdered in the Shoah, I empathise with all those who lost their families.
“I can’t imagine what it was like to have their families murdered in front of their eyes.”
