Trump’s Gaza peace plan backed by UN Security Council
UK votes in favour of comprehensive 20-point peace plan for region
The United Kingdom has voted in favour of a United Nations Security Council resolution endorsing US President Donald Trump’s Gaza ceasefire initiative.
The resolution, which outlines a comprehensive 20-point peace plan, was supported by 13 countries—including the UK, France, and Somalia—with none opposing. Russia and China abstained from the vote.
A cornerstone of the plan is the creation of an International Stabilisation Force (ISF), to which the US claims several unnamed countries have offered support.
The ISF will operate alongside Israel and Egypt, as well as a newly trained and vetted Palestinian police force, to secure border areas and oversee the disarmament of non-state armed groups, including Hamas. Until now, policing in Gaza has been under Hamas control.
However, Hamas has rejected the resolution, arguing that it does not address Palestinian rights and demands.
In a statement posted on Telegram, Hamas said the plan “imposes an international guardianship mechanism on the Gaza Strip, which our people and their factions reject.”
The terror group also claimed that involving an international force in Gaza’s internal affairs “strips it of its neutrality, and turns it into a party to the conflict in favour of the occupation.”
US Ambassador to the UN Mike Waltz told the Security Council that the ISF would be responsible for “securing the area, supporting the demilitarisation of Gaza, dismantling the terrorist infrastructure, removing weapons, and ensuring the safety of Palestinian civilians.”
President Trump hailed the Security Council’s vote as “historic,” describing it as an endorsement of the new Board of Peace (BoP), whose final membership will be announced soon.
“This will go down as one of the biggest approvals in the history of the United Nations, will lead to further peace all over the world, and is a moment of true historic proportions!” he wrote on his Truth Social platform.
The US, the Palestinian Authority, and several Arab and Muslim-majority states—including Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey—have urged swift implementation of the resolution.
The Palestinian Authority called for the terms to be enacted “urgently and immediately.”
UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper stressed the need for increased humanitarian assistance for Gaza. “We must now have urgent action to open all the crossings, lift restrictions, and flood Gaza with aid. And we must keep up progress for a two-state solution with peace and security for Israelis and Palestinians side by side,” she said.
In another Truth Social post, Trump thanked the countries that supported the effort, including Qatar, Egypt, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Turkiye, and Jordan.
He promised further announcements regarding the Board of Peace’s membership in the coming weeks.
Trump previously said former prime minister Sir Tony Blair was among the names being considered for a role on the peace board for Gaza, but added he wanted to “find out that he is an acceptable choice to everybody”.
