Uber ride-sharing banned in Israel a month after launch
Tel Aviv court responds to petition by taxi drivers' union and rival firm Gett, telling Uber they must stop operating their service
An Israeli court has ordered Uber to stop its ride-sharing operation in Israel less than a month after the service was launched in Tel Aviv.
A taxi drivers’ union and rival transit application Gett petitioned Tel Aviv District Court earlier this month to serve Uber with an injunction, claiming it violated an Israeli law forbidding drivers without taxi licences from charging passengers.
Judge Eitan Orenstein ordered the ban on Uber’s ride-sharing programmes in Israel – uberDAY and uberNIGHT – from Wednesday, and raised concerns about its insurance for passengers.
Uber can still operate its taxi-hailing service.
The firm launched its pilot ride-sharing programme in Israel last year, but has faced opposition from the Transportation Ministry, which filed a suit against the company in May for violating regulations.
