Children at a Jewish summer camp in western Ukraine were rushed to bomb shelters this week as air raid sirens blared and drones flew overhead, marking a rare escalation in the war’s reach to the region.

Camp Yeka, which hosts dozens of Jewish children from communities devastated by Russia’s invasion, confirmed its staff “calmly and efficiently” followed emergency procedures when the threat emerged.

“Our top priority is the safety and well-being of every camper and staff member,” said Rabbi Levi Berger, Camp Yeka’s director. “Thanks to our devoted team and clear protocols, every child was brought to safety calmly and efficiently.”

No injuries were reported, and programming has since resumed. However, the scare has underscored the risks facing Ukrainian civilians even in areas previously considered relatively safe.

Camp organisers say operational and security costs have spiked, and the camp is now appealing for urgent donations to continue functioning as a safe haven for Jewish children amid war.

“Despite the tension, the spirit of the camp remains strong,” Berger added. “The resilience, warmth, and sense of family at Camp Yeka are more powerful than ever.”
