United Synagogue rolls out video-on-demand service
The move was inspired by the success of livestreams broadcast on social media by the movement during the coronavirus pandemic
United Synagogue has rolled out a new video-on-demand service in a move it says was inspired by the success of livestreams broadcast during the pandemic.
The online channel, already accessible on www.theus.tv, contains videos of services, events, Jewish learning material and even talks on culture and current affairs.
Recordings of services and online events brought online during the lockdown garnered tens of thousands of views on social media, according to the movement, which recently celebrated its 150th anniversary.
Marketing manager David Nielsen cited the coronavirus crisis as “the catalyst” for the project but added that “the long-term vision was to create an enduring shift in the way that the United Synagogue presents content and engages with its members, communities and the wider Jewish community.”
“What better week than the week we celebrate our 150th anniversary to launch a product that represents our future and potential to reach out to our communities in ways our founders could never have imagined,” he added.
United Synagogue leaders were urged to ensure congregations retain an online presence after reopening so members unable to attend services in person do not feel excluded.
The advice was shared with communities last month in a 22-page guide released ahead of the government’s easing of restrictions on places of worship.
