US seeks successor to former Beth Din Dayan Yonason Abraham

The United Synagogue is hiring for a new Dayan “of the highest calibre” following the departure of Yonason Abraham from the London Beth Din.

With a salary of up to £110k a year depending on experience, the role involves participating in all areas of work of the rabbinic court, including supporting community rabbis and members of local congregations.

Dayan Menachem Gelley, Rosh Beth Din of the London Beth Din, said: “If I had to sum up the purpose of the Beth Din al regel echat , on one foot as the Talmudic sage Hillel was famously asked to do about Judaism, I would say that we ensure that Jewish life can flourish in the UK. We seek to assist both communities and individuals with the challenges they face.

“We are seeking a new Dayan of the highest calibre: a Talmid Chacham of repute but also someone with a sensitive and empathetic approach, combining an understanding of British culture and the British Jewish community.

“The recruitment process will be challenging and I am under no illusion the criteria in the job description are demanding. We will interview only excellent candidates and will make an appointment consistent with the highest standards expected of the London Beth Din.”

The opening follows the sudden departure of Yonason Abraham from the London Beth Din in April, for which no reason was given. The ex-Dayan wrote in a letter to his congregants that he had “fallen short of the standards expected” and was “deeply sorry I have let you down”.
