VIDEO: Israeli women’s basketball team attacked in Turkey
Israel’s women’s national basketball team were attacked by objects thrown by Turkish supporters during a qualifying round match for the 2017 EuroBasket tournament.
Members of the team were singing the Hatikvah, when supporters started throwing objects at them, while othered jeered at the Israeli players. Fans had been ejected from the arena after waving Palestinian flags before the match started.
Team coach Eden Inbar said: “This was a complex experience with a hostile arena, we played against a good team and I’m proud of the stand that we made.”
MK Avigdor Liberman called on the Foreign Ministry to file an official protest to Turkey, and called for the Sports and Culture Ministry to demand the International Basketball Federation take action against the Turkish national team and Turkish Basketball Federation.
