Video: ‘We should have gassed the lot of you’, Jewish student told in Leeds bar
Danielle Greyman, 21, filmed the moment she was targeted with antisemitic abuse
Police are investigating after a drinker in a Leeds bar told a Jewish woman: “We should have gassed the lot of you”.
Sociology student Danielle Greyman, 21, filmed the moment she was targeted in a antisemitic barrage last week at The Hedley Verity pub.
She told the MailOnline an argument broke out after two individuals, pictured in the clip, refused to either move or socially distance at the table she was holding for her friends. The man in the video asked if she was Jewish, after the woman he was with overheard the student saying “mazeltov”.
Greyman started filming, and the man in the clip, who was drinking, said he is German, before adding that she “looks like a Jew”, and that “we should have gassed the lot of you”.
She tells him: “What you’ve actually just done is commit a hate crime”, and that it’s antisemitism, adding that she will go to the police.
West Yorkshire Police confirmed officers “were called at around 5.45pm on 6 August to a report of a hate incident which was believed to have happened a short time prior.”
The victim reported being verbally abused by the suspects outside a bar on Woodhouse Lane, Leeds, before they made off.”
The former JCoSS student, now in her third year at Leeds University, said she’d been in contact with the police and the Community Security Trust who “have been fantastic” supporting her.
“I definitely feel shaken from the incident and I think I’d probably repressed a lot of the negative emotions up until recently.
Wetherspoon, the chain which runs The Hedley Verity pub, asked the two individuals in the clip to leave and they have been banned from returning, according to the Jewish Telegraph.
Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said: “ We are fully aware of this incident.
“We apologise wholeheartedly to the individual who was subjected to this disgusting outburst.
“We have zero tolerance to racism and are deeply upset that a customer at The Hedley Verity had to endure this.”
