Voice of Jewish Sport: Top trio leave the rest in their wake
THERE ARE three teams in particular who are going great guns in their respective divisions. Scrabble, North London Raiders A and Maccabi London Lions are currently sporting 100 percent winning starts to the season, and without wishing to jinx any of them, you’d be hard pressed to see those records being dented any time soon. Like Superman, Batman and Star Trek, Scrabble have been successfully rebooted from their 1990’s heydays, and having clocked up win number ten from ten games, look as if they could win the Division Two title in record time. Premier Division side Raiders and Masters Division Two side Lions also look as if if they could retain their titles at a similar cantor. The question is, can anyone stop them?
MACCABI TEL Aviv endured a miserable Champions League campaign with last week’s 1-0 defeat to Dynamo Kyiv signalling their sixth straight loss. The three-times reigning Israeli champions became only the 16th team in the competition’s history to lose all six group games, and the 10th to score only one goal. The only positive to take is that at least they did slightly better than Maccabi Haifa. Back in the 2009/10 season, the Greens not only didn’t pick up a point, they also failed to score at all – the only team to hold that dubious award.
AVRAM GRANT certainly seems to garner different opinions in his role as Ghana coach, and he certainly doesn’t seem to have impressed African Football officials. Despite guiding the country to the final of the African Cup of Nations, losing out on the title on penalties just one month into his role, the Israeli’s name was nevertheless missing when the final five-man shortlist of candidates was announced on Monday for the 2015 CAF Coach of Year Award. However, his loss will be someone else’s gain… potentially the manager of the Mali or Nigerian U17 side.
