Warning over ‘increase in family clusters’ of Covid-19 in Golders Green
Council warns of 'small increase' among Orthodox Jewish communities in Golders Green and urges social distancing measures
Barnet Council last night urged Golders Green residents to maintain social distancing measures following a “small increase” in positive Covid-19 cases.
An alert, issued to households in the NW11 area, cited “anecdotal evidence” of an “increase in family clusters of cases in the Jewish Orthodox communities.”
Though the existing evidence was not “granular enough” to trace the increase to a specific community, Barnet’s Health and Wellbeing Board cited similar trends among Orthodox Jewish families in Hackney and Haringey.
Cllr Caroline Stock, Chair of Barnet Council’s Health and Wellbeing Board, urged residents to “respect, at all times, social distancing measures in order to keep Golders Green and Barnet a safe place”.
She added that the council had been working closely with faith groups to develop a Best Practice guide for places of worship.
The number of deaths in the Jewish community from Covid-19 has surpassed 500, according to data collated by the Board of Deputies.
Last month, research by the Institute for Jewish Policy Research (JPR) declared an unknown “Jewish factor” behind the disproportionately high number of Jewish deaths from coronavirus.
