WATCH: Are the beards of Brooklyn hipster or Hasidic?
Untamed facial hair – along with fixed-gear bikes, vintage clothes and coffee alchemy – has become one of the unmistakable calling cards of hipsterdom.
Predictably, then, bare faces are something of a rarity in Brooklyn – by far the trendiest of New York City’s five boroughs – though the high density of hasidic shuls in the area has as much to do with it as the artisan bakeries.
Now, as part of US late-night talk show Jimmy Kimmel Live!’s week-long stint filming in Brooklyn, the area’s beard wars have given rise to a surprisingly difficult new game: Hipster or Hasidic?
Watch as Kimmel – sporting his own set of whiskers – interrogates New Yorkers on whether their beards are born of fashion or faith.
