When was it founded?
The synagogue was founded in 1948.
How big is the congregation?
We have more than 1,100 members.
What does the synagogue offer young families?
We have a unique Shabbat service for parents and young children called NOSH – No Ordinary Shabbat. There is a nursery (Stars) with extended hours based in the local Jewish primary school. Monday night at the shul is club evening for children from Year 4 (club 4-7) followed by club for teenagers (iClub). There are two groups of Brownies who meet during the week onsite. Ice cream and discussion at the rabbi’s home for teenagers is on Thursday evenings.
Is there a cheder?
No, but there is a thriving primary school – Wolfson Hillel – that is a big draw for young families moving into the area.
Tell us an interesting fact about the synagogue that we may not know?
Rabbi and Rebbetzen Epstein were appointed to the shul less than a year ago and have already introduced a wide range of creative programmes and are revitalising our community. The synagogue is on excellent train and tube routes for easy access to the centre of London and we have good value housing of all types available in a leafy suburb, close to the M25.
Tell us about any upcoming events you have planned:
There is so much planned for the year, including an exclusive guided visit to Kenwood House and a Yom Yerushalayim breakfast next month. On Rosh Chodesh Sivan, we are hosting a ladies pamper evening. We held a Yom Hazikaron and Yom Ha’atzmaut programme led by Magic Moments visitors from Israel that was attended by 200 people of all ages.
What are the highlights of your Shabbat morning kiddush?
We offer a warm and friendly atmosphere and a chance to chat over whisky, or tea and coffee. A cholent kiddush is held on special occasions or when members are celebrating a particular event.
