The Jewish community’s leading employment and business support organisation raised more than £1.1 million during a 36-hour online crowdfunding marathon.

Some 2,688 donations were made, with 1,766 from new donors and included funds from a number of matchers who agreed to double every penny received, making it the most successful campaign in the charity’s history.

Chief executive Debbie Lebrett described the fundraiser as “a powerful confirmation of what we can achieve together” ensuring the charity “can continue serving our community.”

Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, Work Avenue has supported more than 40,000 individuals and families and says demand for its services has never been greater, with people facing financial, employment and business challenges brought about by recent economic turmoil, the cost-of-living crisis and the new threat to jobs from AI.

Founder and chair Mark Morris added: “We are delighted with the success of this matching campaign. Work Avenue is a vital service in our community and once again we are grateful to so many who have partnered with us to ensure Work Avenue can continue helping thousands of people to earn a living with dignity.”
