Global humanitarian charity World Jewish Relief has appointed senior Jewish communal figure David Weisberg as Executive Director of World Jewish Relief USA, in a move aimed at accelerating the organisation’s growth and impact at a time of escalating global need.

Weisberg’s appointment comes as the UK-based charity continues to scale up its international response to conflict and humanitarian emergencies, including its long-running operation in Ukraine. Since the full-scale Russian invasion began, World Jewish Relief has delivered aid to more than 377,000 people across the country.

With more than 30 years’ experience leading Jewish and non-Jewish organisations across the United States, Weisberg brings extensive expertise in fundraising, strategic growth and community engagement. He previously served as Chief Development Officer at the Mazzoni Centre and as CEO of the Federation for Jewish Philanthropy of Upper Fairfield County.

Founded in 1933 to support Jews fleeing Nazi persecution, World Jewish Relief has deep historical roots within the UK Jewish community. During the 1930s and 1940s, it assisted 65,000 refugees, including almost 10,000 children rescued through the Kindertransport. Today, the charity works in 19 countries, supporting hundreds of thousands of people affected by war, displacement and disaster, with a particular focus on women and girls, older people and those forced from their homes.

Weisberg said his decision to take on the role was driven by the organisation’s values-led approach to humanitarian work.

“For more than 90 years, World Jewish Relief has shown what it means to live Jewish values in action – helping people in crisis, regardless of who they are or where they live,” he said. “I am deeply aligned with that vision and enormously enthusiastic about introducing World Jewish Relief’s work to the US Jewish community and beyond.”

Paul Anticoni OBE, Chief Executive of World Jewish Relief, said the appointment marked a significant step in strengthening the charity’s presence in the US.

“David’s extensive experience and unwavering commitment to service make him an exceptional fit for this role,” he said. “I am excited at the prospect of dramatically growing World Jewish Relief’s visibility, reach and resourcing across the United States.”
