AJEX podcast brings untold Jewish military stories to life
'For Honour's Sake' includes centenarians discussing their wartime service
AJEX has launched a new podcast series focused on the contributions and sacrifices of Jewish soldiers, sailors and airmen and women during World War II, which includes interviews with centenarians discussing their service.
‘For Honour’s Sake’ – the first seven episodes of which are available on YouTube and Spotify – has been produced to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of the war.
The episodes include the experiences of 101-year old Ruth Brook Klauber, reflecting on her journey from fleeing Nazi Germany as a child to serving in Britain’s Women’s Auxiliary Air Force during WWII. During her episode, AJEX presents her with the UK War and Defence Medals in recognition of her service.
Also featured is 101-year old WWII veteran and Kindertransport refugee Henny Franks, who shares her childhood journey from escaping Nazi Germany to serving in the Auxiliary Territorial Service in Britain, her life after the war, including reuniting with her mother in Brussels.
Other episodes include Royal Engineers veteran Jamie Cooper-Morris and his wife Amba; Chelsea pensioner Barrie Davey, recounting his wartime childhood and subsequent military service and Daniel Berke, who discusses his grandfather’s experiences as a specials forces Wingate Chindit and Japanese prisoner of war.
AJEX national chair Dan Fox said: “Creating ‘For Honour’s Sake’ has been a deeply moving experience. We set out to preserve and share the powerful, personal stories of Jewish men and women who served with courage, resilience and pride. Hearing directly from veterans and the currently serving is a rare privilege and a vital reminder of their enduring legacy. This series honours the legacy of Jewish service in the British Armed Forces and ensures these voices continue to inspire generations to come.”
More episodes will be added to the 80th anniversary series.
