Community urged to attend unity demonstration with Israel today
The 'No to Rockets, Yes to Peace' protest seeks to show solidarity with those under rocket fire, and calls for an end to the cycle of violence between Israelis and Palestinians
The community is being urged to show its solidarity with Israelis under rocket attack, by attending a virtual demonstration today.
The Covid-safe protest will take place across the country from people’s homes, with participants asked to take a picture saying ‘No to Rockets, Yes to Peace’.
This comes after thousands of projectiles have been fired at Israeli cities in the past week, with the IDF striking Hamas positions in Gaza in response.
The Israeli death toll is currently nine, with 119 killed in Gaza, including many Hamas terrorists.
Organised by the Board of Deputies, communal organisations participating include the Jewish Leadership Council, UJIA, the Zionist Federation, We Believe in Israel and BICOM, who will share messages of unity on their social media channels.
The online protest will take place between 10-12am on Sunday 16 May, with people urged to use the hashtag #NoToRocketsYesToPeace online.
Board of Deputies President Marie van der Zyl said: “We want to send a strong message of support to Israelis who are being subjected to Hamas’ and other terrorist militant groups’ indiscriminate rocket attacks raining down on their homes and communities.
“We also want to declare our support for peace between Israelis and Palestinians and an end to the loss of innocent life. Now is also the time to stop the violence between Jews and Arabs within Israel and start to rebuild trust.”
