Corbyn references ‘horrors of the past’ at PMQs ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day
'It's a time for us all to reflect on the horrors of the past and remind us of the evils of Nazism, genocide, antisemitism', the Labour leader said
Labour’s outgoing leader touched upon the forthcoming Holocaust Memorial Day during Prime Minister’s Questions.
Speaking in the House of Commons, Jeremy Corbyn said: “Next Monday we will be commemorating National Holocaust [Memorial] Day. It’s a time for us all to reflect on the horrors of the past and remind us of the evils of Nazism, genocide, antisemitism and indeed all forms of racism which we must always all be implacably determined to route out wherever it appears.”
Prime Minister Boris Johnson replied: “Let me join Mr Corbyn in what he has said about the importance of Holocaust Memorial Day and of course in stamping out antisemitism and resurgence of ant-Semitism in our country.”
In the lead up to the national commemoration, the Holocaust Educational Trust urged MPs to avoid “tokenism and empty gestures” on HMD as it warned against the “expanding poison of antisemitism” in the UK.
“We cannot ignore the difficult year we leave behind us, where we faced adversity and sometimes felt abandoned by some we thought we could count on,” warned the trust’s chief executive Karen Pollock said.
