Downing Street has said the Prime Minister “stands with the Israeli people” following the “violent, terrorist attack” in Jerusalem that killed at least six, and left many others injured.

Keir Starmer’s spokesperson also confirmed that the PM would be welcoming Palestinian president Mahmoud Abbas to Downing Street on Monday evening ahead of pre-planned talks.

At Monday’s Westminster lobby journalists meeting, the PM’s spokesperson spoke of the “tragic scenes emerging from Jerusalem this morning”.

He added:”Our thoughts are with the innocent victims who have lost their lives, all those who are injured, and their families who have suffered a horrifying ordeal.

“We stand with the Israeli people in the face of such a violent, terrorist attack”.

In a post on X new Foreign Secretary Yvette Copper wrote:”I am horrified by the terrorist attack in Jerusalem. My thoughts are with the victims and their families at this awful time.”

Confirming the meeting at Downing Street with Abbas, the No. 10 spokesperson said talks would include discussions on the role of the Palestinian Authority “in the pathway to peace, including the swift implication of the reform commitments” made by Abbas and the Palestinian Prime Minister, Mohammad Mustafa.

Following Monday’s incident the Palestinian presidency issued a statement reaffirming its firm rejection and condemnation of any targeting of civilians and its renunciation of all forms of violence.

The meeting with Starmer in London would also see the discussion of broader topics, including the need for an immediate ceasefire, as well as  “the release of all hostages cruelly detained by Hamas”, Downing Street said.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog is scheduled to visit the UK later this week. Jewish News has previously reported that Starmer is likely to meet with him.

Asked about the implications of Monday’s attack being carried out by terrorists from the West Bank on the UK’s support for Palestinian recognition, No.10 said immediate thoughts “are with those who have lost their lives and have been injured.”
