QUOTES OF THE WEEK:

PETER MORRISON TROPHY QUARTER-FINAL:

FAIRLOP FC 2 NORTH LONDON RAIDERS A 2 AET
Raiders won 4-3 on penalties
The Premier Division side endured an almighty scare before eventually seeing off their lower league opposition through the lottery of a penalty shoot-out.

Goals from Alex Moss and Ben Joseph took them to the penalties, where both of them along with Jonny Kay and Joe Cohen converted from the spot.

Raiders manager Dan Shafron told jewishnews.co.uk: “It was a great game of football and genuinely a brilliant advert for the MGBSFL and the National Trophy. Fairlop were excellent opponents and I can see how and why they got to this stage of the competition. Our boys were well aware not to take them lightly and I felt the game was played with mutual respect, great intensity and a lot of desire.

“Of course when it goes to penalties anything can happen and I’m delighted we managed to win that lottery. Fairlop will be gutted but they are a great group of boys and I’m sure if they play like they did today, they’ll go on to win their league and have plenty more success moving forward.”

Bradley Gayer scored both of Fairlop’s goals, with player-manager Aaron Dias telling jewishnews.co.uk: “Once again we went toe-to-toe with one of the giants from the top division, it was a tough tough battle out there and I couldn’t have asked anything more from our players!

“There was too many good performances to mention any specifically, but I would like to make a special mention to two players who I’m not going to name, after extra time they both put their hand up and said they wanted a penalty, unfortunately it wasn’t either of their days and they both failed to convert. At Fairlop we win and lose as a team and I can’t speak highly enough of both these players work rate and commitment throughout the game and season.

“We’re are absolutely gutted to be out the cup! But have no time to feel sorry for ourselves, the league was always the priority this season with the cup run being a bonus. Seven games left in the league, seven wins is the minimum I expect!”

REDBRIDGE JEWISH CARE A 4 HENDON UNITED SPORTS 6
Hendon returned to the top of the table as a hat-trick from Zac Lewis helped them to this impressive win.

Dovi FehlerMoses Seitler and Ari Last made it a sweet six, with player-manager Greg Corin telling jewishnews.co.uk: “It was a very important win for us in our pursuit for the league title. Redbridge year after year offer great competition and have a number of talented players. Today we dug in, missing key defensive members of the squad and utilised our superb attacking talent to get a vital win.

“Although there were only two goals being the difference in the score line, I do think Hendon clearly deserved the win and were the better team.

“We take it game by game and we now can’t wait to face Oakwood next week which is a real six pointer. Hopefully we will have a number of players back available for this Sunday’s game and Moses Seitler with us.

“There are plenty of fantastic individuals in this Hendon team but we are working hard as a team which is really pleasing. Going forward we want to keep our defence much tighter and continue to let our forward talent flourish.

“It’s a pleasure to manage and play with some of this great talent. It’s now for the team to keep the consistency and the work rate high and ensure when we’re in possession we play our exciting brand of football.”

Calvin and Kier Dickson, together with Elliot Black and Russell Goldstein scored the home side’s four goals.

TABLE

REDBRIDGE JEWISH CARE C 2 NORTH LONDON RAIDERS B 5
The Raiders moved a step closer to securing promotion as two goals from Jake Gilbert helped them to this win.

Elliot Espinoza, Ben Cherkas and Josh Green also found the back of the net.

Manager Doron Salomon told jewishnews.co.uk: “We conceded two poor goals and missed so many chances to make this a big statement victory, but I can hardly complain when we’ve scored five goals away from home, it was an outstanding performance.

“We were struggling to put a team out until as recently as 24 hours ago and ended up playing a third of the game with 10 men including a couple carrying injuries. It really was a brilliant effort, I could nominate everyone for team of the week!

“After Faithfold secured the title two weeks ago, it would have been easy for us to take our foot off but we want to finish as high as we can and will take the same approach next week in our final league game.”

DIVISION TWO:
FIXTURES & RESULTS
TABLE

BAYERN MINCHA 2 CATFORD & BROMLEY 0
Two goals from Sam Leader saw Mincha to the win which saw them maintain top spot.

Mincha manager Alon Pinhas told jewishnews.co.uk: “We were down to just 12 players with some injuries and late pull outs, while Catford were a new look side from two weeks ago, but in truth it turned out to be a comfortable win.

“Overall, it was a comfortable win and good performance with us having 2 more cup finals to play. We wish Catford best of luck for the rest of their campaign.”

FC TEAM 4 MILL HILL DONS 6
Four goals from Zach Cohen inspired The Dons to the three points.

Adam Isaacs and Harry Moss completed a superb win for the visitors, for whom manager Brandon Hamme told jewishnews.co.uk: “It was messy at times, but as a whole another solid performance from the boys particularly in the second half. We will take all the positives of this game onto the next game.”

Player-manager Mitch Young scored twice for Team, with Eddie Sternberg and own goal accounting for their four strikes.

Young told jewishnews.co.uk: “We bossed the first half and deservedly went in at half-time in front. Some of our attacking play was sensational and they couldn’t cope with our front three.

“The second half we tired and with no subs, their fitness shone through and they deservedly won the second half. Saying that I believe the referee got two key game changing decisions wrong which affected the result. Their equaliser was offside, the lino gave it and he bizarrely over ruled him and we equalised in the last minute with the ball clearly over the line and he did not see that. It was a shame we had so many players missing today but well done to them – our sole focus is on retaining the Barry Goldstein Cup.”
