Former PM Theresa May backs Mike Freer during visit to Golders Green
May met local voters, businesses and Hatzolah volunteers in Golders Green while on the campaign trail
Theresa May has backed Conservative candidate Mike Freer while on the campaign trail on Thursday.
Freer is defending a majority of 1,652 votes in a race against the Liberal Democrat candidate Luciana Berger and Labour’s Ross Houston for the Finchley and Golders Green seat.
The Conservative hopeful was joined by local activists in greeting the former Prime Minister for a tour of Golders Green, where she met voters, local businesses and Hatzolah volunteers.
Buying kosher salt from Kosher Kingdom, she also visited the Judaica shop Sofer Stam, where she was presented with a framed thank you message featuring her name in Hebrew.
After the visit, May sat down for an interview with the newspaper the Ham & High, in which she described Freer as a “man of huge integrity.”
“I see him standing up and raising issues that matter to people here in this constituency,” she told the newspaper.
“He has been a fantastically strong voice for the Jewish community over the years that he has been in parliament. They have an MP in Mike they can trust, and trust to take up their issues and work hard for them.”
In a Facebook post on Thursday evening, Freer said he was “honoured to have her support” and that May “strongly agrees with me that a vote for anyone other than a Conservative candidate in this election will lead to a Jeremy Corbyn government.”
