Hamas claims responsibility for Jerusalem shooting that killed six
Palestinian terror group hails attack at Ramot Junction hours after Israeli strike on its leaders in Doha
Hamas has claimed responsibility for Monday’s terror attack in Jerusalem that left six people dead and 12 wounded, six of them seriously.
The two gunmen, identified by the Shin Bet as Mohammad Taha, 21, from Qatanna, and Muthanna Amro, 20, from Qubeiba, opened fire on passengers and pedestrians at Ramot Junction shortly after 10am. Using improvised “Carlo” submachine guns, they targeted a number 62 bus and a crowded stop at the city’s northern entrance.
An off-duty soldier from the IDF’s Hasmonean Brigade, together with armed civilians, returned fire and killed both assailants. Police later arrested a man from East Jerusalem suspected of smuggling the attackers into the city.
The victims were named as Levi Yitzhak Pash, 57; Yaakov Pinto, 25; Yisrael Matzner, 28; Rabbi Yosef David, 43; Rabbi Mordechai Steintzag, 79; and Sara Mendelson, 60.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the scene, vowing to “pursue and encircle” the attackers’ home villages near Ramallah and declaring: “We will destroy Hamas as we promised and free our hostages – all of our hostages.”
Hamas issued a statement on Tuesday calling the shooting a “heroic operation.” The claim came just hours after the group said its leaders had survived an Israeli strike in Doha, Qatar, in which at least six people were reported killed, including relatives and aides of senior Hamas figure Khalil al-Hayya.
The Doha strike – the first such Israeli attack inside Qatar – has drawn sharp condemnation from Arab states, the UK and France, with Qatari officials denouncing it as a violation of sovereignty.
