‘Important step’: Israel welcomes EU sanctions on Iran’s drone and missile producers
'The idea is to target the companies that are needed for the drones, for the missiles,' European Council president Charles Michel said.
Israel welcomed a decision by the European Union to impose sanctions on Iran’s drone and missile producers after Tehran and proxies attacked Israel with 350 missiles and drones.
“I congratulate the EU countries on the decision to impose sanctions on Iran. This is an important step on the way to defanging the snake – and thanks to all our friends for their support and assistance. Iran must be stopped now before it is too late,” Foreign Minister Yisrael Katz said.
European Council president Charles Michel announced on Tuesday that the nations decided to put in place sanctions against Iran.
“It is a clear signal that we wanted to send. The idea is to target the companies that are needed for the drones, for the missiles,” he said.
French President Emmanuel Macron said thew world has to “expand (sanctions) on Iran. We are in favour of sanctions that can also target all those who help manufacture drones and missiles that were used in the attacks last Saturday and Sunday.”
The EU also called on all parties to “exercise the utmost restraint and to refrain from any action that may increase tensions in the region.”
Israel has pushed for new sanctions on Iran since Saturday, in an attempt to further isolate the already sanctioned regime.
A source told Jewish News that Israel is walking a fine line now, trying to avoid angering its allies by responding too hard to Iran’s attack, but at the same time send a signal that Jerusalem won’t accept this kind of behaviour.
The source added that the war cabinet has agreed that there will be a response, but that Netanyahu seems to be indecisive and hesitant with launching an attack.
