Israeli athletics success brings ‘joy to the country’
Israel's Marhu Teferi finishes second in World Athletics Championships marathon on Sunday in Budapest, days after women's team victory at gymnastics final
Israel has enjoyed unprecedented success at the World Athletics Championship after picking up a silver medal in the men’s marathon.
Two days earlier the country’s women’s rhythmic gymnastic team won gold at the Rhythmic Gymnastics World Championship in Valencia, Spain – one better than the silver they achieved at last year’s championships.
In a performance that Israeli president Isaac Herzog said had brought “joy to the country”, Ethiopian-born runner Marhu Teferi, 31, came second in the marathon race in Budapest, Hungary at the World Athletics finals on Sunday.
It was Israel’s first ever medal in the event.
Achieving a time of 2:09:12 Teferi finished 20 seconds behind the Uganda winner, Victor Kiplangat.
Meanwhile, the Israeli female gymnastics team saw off challenges from China and Spain to secure top place in their finals event in Spain..
