Israeli police have arrested eight activists from the Omdim Beyachad far left group, after they poured buckets of red paint outside the home of the IDF Chief of Staff to symbolise “the rivers of blood that will be spilled if Israel moves to reoccupy Gaza, endanger the hostages and kill innocents”.

The home of General Eyal Zamir, in Hod Hasharon, has been targeted by left-wing protestors in recent days urging the IDF chief to defy the government and refuse to occupy Gaza City. It is widely understood that General Zamir had significantly opposed the Israeli cabinet’s decision to continue the war in Gaza, with leaked documents reportedly attributed to the senior commander stating that Israel should accept a deal with Hamas to end the war and release the hostages.

In a statement on social media, Omdim Beyachad said:

“Even Eyal Zamir knows – only an extreme minority profits while we all pay in blood! We must refuse to carry out war crimes and abandon the hostages.”

The group pledged that it would not stop “until the end of the destruction and abandonment and until the government of death is out of our lives.”

Yair Lapid, leader of Israel’s opposition Yesh Atid party, “strongly condemned” what he described as the actions of “a handful of radical extremists”.

Benny Gantz, leader of Israel’s opposition Blue and White party and himself a former military head of the IDF, said:

“The Chief of Staff leads the IDF with dedication and responsibility – an attack on him and his family is an attack on all IDF fighters, our soldiers, and national resilience. Spraying his house with red paint is not a protest or criticism – it is simply madness.

“I strongly condemn the act and call on law enforcement authorities to apprehend the culprits and bring them to justice.”
