Jeremy Newmark ‘rules out standing for Finchley and Golders Green’ in 2019
The councillor has told members he would not accept such an offer in the event of an election this year, Jewish News understands
Former Jewish Leadership Council chief executive Jeremy Newmark is understood to have ruled out standing as a Labour candidate in Finchley and Golders Green in any snap elections this year.
Candidates from the previous election are sometimes asked to stand again in the event of a snap election where no other candidate is in place.
But it is understood the leader of the Labour Group on Hertsmere Council has told members he would not accept such an offer in the event of an election this year.
According to a report in the Jewish Chronicle today, Newmark is considering a run for the Finchley and Golders Green seat, after a narrow miss in 2017, with senior rabbi Danny Rich tipped as a possible rival.
But Newmark, who is a Borehamwood councillor, since said: “My statement to the JC was clear that this is not on my agenda. In any case, I am not in favour of central selections unless there is absolutely no alternative.”
Meanwhile, rabbi Rich did not confirm nor deny the report when contacted by Jewish News.
“As you are aware all selections, where there is no sitting MP, have been suspended by the NEC,” he said in a statement.
“It is not yet clear what the selection procedure will be and so any expressions of interest are premature.”
