Jewish Labour Movement: Balloting begins to back leader and deputy candidates
The process comes hot on the heels of the Labour Party's most catastrophic electoral defeat since 1935 and a deepening row over antisemitism
A Jewish group affiliated to the Labour Party for a century has begun balloting members to nominate leadership and deputy leadership candidates.
The Jewish Labour Movement will endorse candidates vying to replace Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn – and Tom Watson, who quit as deputy last year, leaving the post vacant.
The group, which refused to endorse the Labour Party at the 2019 general election, has been critical of Corbyn’s handling of antisemitism allegations in the party.
Balloting began on Monday evening and members have until 11am on Friday 14 February to rank candidates.
The nomination process comes hot on the heels of the Labour Party’s most catastrophic electoral defeat since 1935 and a campaign overshadowed by a deepening row over antisemitism.
MPs bidding for Corbyn’s job will seek to mend relations with the community at the Liberal Jewish Synagogue next week.
Leadership candidates Emily Thornberry, Keir Starmer, Lisa Nandy, Rebecca Long-Bailey will face questions from the community at the hustings organised by Jewish News, Jewish Labour Movement and Labour Friends of Israel.
