CLASSICAL MUSIC

Jonathan Manson, Helen Charlston and Sergio Bucheli perform at JW3

An early Bach chamber concert is part of JW3's autumn classical music series this autumn

The clocks will go back this weekend and that means evening activities that make you feel warm inside are top of the list. An enchanting evening of Baroque music at JW3 is just the sort of thing we mean.

Mezzo-soprano Helen Charlston joins Jonathan Manson (viola da gamba and cello) and Sergio Bucheli (lute) for an intimate evening of Baroque chamber music. The program features a dramatic Handel cantata, alongside captivating short works by Purcell, Dowland, Marais, and Charpentier – a rich tapestry of expressive song and instrumental color from across 17th- and 18th-century Europe.

Praised for her “warm, velvety tone and commanding stage presence,” Helen Charlston is one of the leading British mezzo-sopranos of her generation, celebrated for her interpretations of Baroque and early Classical repertoire. A winner of the Handel Singing Competition, she appears regularly with ensembles such as the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, The English Concert, and Vox Luminis.

Jonathan Manson, equally at home on the cello and viola da gamba, is renowned for his work as a soloist and chamber musician with groups including the Dunedin Consort and the English Baroque Soloists. His playing combines historical insight with lyrical expressiveness, making him one of the foremost continuo players on the early music scene.

Sergio Bucheli, a rising star of the lute and theorbo, performs widely with leading period ensembles such as the Academy of Ancient Music and Arcangelo. His refined artistry and imaginative continuo playing bring vivid character and rhythmic vitality to music of the 17th and 18th centuries.

The Early Bach Chamber Concert is at JW3 on 30 October at 7.30pm. Visit jw3.org/classical for details of this and other concerts and to book tickets.
