Kisharon celebrates getting ‘Free School’ status for special needs site
Charity gets good news that Education Secretary has granted new status, as a new funding agreement is backed to support it
The London-based Jewish charity Kisharon has celebrated its special needs school being granted ‘Free School’ status by the Secretary of State for Education.
The charity got the good news on Friday and said work on its Parson Street premises was now underway, with the new building expected to cost £12.5 million. It will increase capacity from 40 pupils to 70, with a wider range of facilities.
Work on the new school is expected to be complete by 2020 and this week the MP for Finchley and Golders Green, Mike Freer, welcomed a new funding agreement between the Department for Education and Kisharon to support the school.
“I welcome the Secretary of State’s decision to back the Kisharon School in its change to a Free School,” said the parliamentarian.
“Free Schools have been a very popular and successful policy backed by this Government, driving up educational standards. I know the Kisharon Free School will offer more local young people new opportunities.”
The charity’s leaders, who also support Jewish adults with learning difficulties, said Kisharon School would soon be a “state-of-the-art” facility. It is run with a Jewish ethos for pupils aged 4-19 who have a range of special needs.
