Kosher kebabs have the chance to be crowned king

The deadline is fast approaching to nominate your favourite kosher kebab or shawarma restaurant for a prestigious award

Feeling hungry? You will be when you read this! Jewish News has teamed up with the British Kebab Awards to serve up a kosher category for the first time.

Dubbed “the most delicious awards in Britain”, the BKA has gone from fringe event to social calendar highlight, with hundreds of parliamentarians now taking part alongside industry leaders, journalists and other professionals. In kosher restaurants kebabs usually take the form of shawarma and we all know how delicious they can be!

“We are delighted to be partnering with Jewish News to add a kosher category to the annual British Kebab Awards,” said founder Ibrahim Dogus. “The awards go from strength to strength. It is a great way of bringing communities together.”

In recent years, the humble kebab has undergone “a transformation in public perception”, say organisers. “Once viewed as an unhealthy late-night snack, they are now enjoyed in a multitude of varieties and settings with family and friends.

With 1.3 million kebabs sold every day, the British kebab industry is worth
£2.8 billion annually to the British economy, providing around 200,000 jobs across restaurants, suppliers and the wider food industry but, until now, kosher kebab offerings could not compete for the coveted annual prize.

Dogus said a celebration of the kebab was a celebration of diversity and immigration into the UK, with Kurdish and Turkish communities among the most prominent. “Immigrants put the great into Great Britain,” he said.

The BKA said: “As a nation we’re proud of our locals; we love to think our town lays claim to the best kebab… Britain loves kebab takeaway and restaurants. This is how proud we are that they’re part of the fabric of our diverse communities.”

Existing categories include best restaurant by region, best kebab house by region, and best kebab van, plus best fine dining, best takeaway, best value, best Lebanese and best chef.

North London eateries currently look up to 2022 winners Devran Kitchen in Haringey and Yaprak Restaurant in Pinner.

From Pita, Samis, Aviv and Kasa to Reubens, Balagan, Bricky’s and Whitehouse Express plus numerous others, kosher shawarma is among some of the best options around. Click here to nominate your favourite but hurry – nominations close on 1 December.
