LFI search for new parliamentary chair after Pearce promoted to PM’s office
LFI director Michael Rubin said the out-going Jon Pearce had been “phenomenal” as chair
Labour Friends of Israel (LFI) has begun the hunt for a new parliamentary chair after the MP Jon Pearce, who took on the role last year, was appointed as the Prime Minister’s parliamentary private secretary.
Pearce, the MP for High Peak in Derbyshire, proved a highly skilled operator as he spoke out in support of the state of Israel at a time of intense criticism over the Benjamin Netanyahu government and the Gaza war.
The promotion into government means he is unable to continue in the role moving forwards.
Pearce said:”“
It was an honour to serve as LFI Chair, albeit often in the most difficult and distressing circumstances.
“Supporting their vital work for a two-state solution and to achieve peace, security and a better future for Israelis and Palestinians alike.”
LFI director Michael Rubin said the MP had been a “phenomenal” and a “courageous” chair for the group.
“I’d like to wish Jon a hearty congratulations on this very well-deserved appointment; we’re delighted for him,” he added.
“Following his appointment, we are sorry that he is stepping down with immediate effect, but it is for the best possible reason, and everyone at LFI wishes him every success.”
Pearce had joined several Labour MPs on an LFI-funded delegation to Israel at the end of May.
Like most supporters of the group he has come under fire from pro-Palestine supporters.
In other moves Keir Starmer has made Georgia Gould, MP for Queen’s Park and Maida Vale an education minister.
Josh Simons, MP for Makerfield, who like Gould is Jewish, has taken up a role as Parliamentary Secretary in the Cabinet Office.
