Mexican Jewish family gives £40m boost to Israel’s largest rehab hospital
Jusidman Foundation donation helps launch major Tel Aviv projects expected to expand care for war-wounded and ageing patients
A Jewish philanthropic foundation from Mexico has pledged £40 million (NIS 200 million) towards the construction of what is set to become Israel’s largest rehabilitation hospital, in a major boost to the country’s healthcare system amid growing demand for treatment for wounded soldiers and trauma survivors.
The gift from the Jusidman Family Philanthropic Foundation will help fund the new Jusidman Rehabilitation Hospital in Tel Aviv’s Sde Dov district, a project expected to cost around £290 million ($390 million) in total.
The new facility will replace the existing Reuth Rehabilitation Hospital in Tel Aviv’s Yad Eliyahu neighbourhood and is expected to open within the next six years.
Plans for the hospital include approximately 540 beds, expanded day rehabilitation services, specialist trauma care, advanced treatment clinics, imaging facilities, hydrotherapy services and dedicated research and development spaces.
The project comes as Israel continues to deal with a sharp rise in rehabilitation needs following the 7 October attacks and the subsequent war, alongside increasing demand linked to the country’s ageing population.
Reuth, which is marking its 65th anniversary, is one of Israel’s leading rehabilitation centres and currently provides treatment for patients from across the country. It is affiliated with Tel Aviv University’s Faculty of Medicine and operates specialised rehabilitation programmes covering neurological injuries, orthopaedic recovery, respiratory conditions and geriatric care.
The hospital also runs one of Israel’s largest rehabilitation day-treatment programmes and provides support for survivors of trauma, including victims of the 7 October attacks.
Igal Jusidman, representing the family foundation, said: “For many years, the field of rehabilitation medicine did not receive its proper place in the Israeli healthcare system. A long and painful war was required to remind us all how essential rehabilitation is for restoring life, dignity, and independence to injured people.
“Through the Jusidman Rehabilitation Hospital, we wish to take part in the recovery journey of those who defended the State of Israel and paid a heavy personal price for it. By establishing a world-class rehabilitation centre, we aspire to honour their sacrifice and accompany them on the path to healing, hope, and new life. This is our way of saying thank you for your service, your commitment, and your sacrifice.”
The donation forms part of a wider wave of major philanthropic support for Israeli healthcare institutions since the outbreak of war.
Prof. Nachman Ash, chairman of the Reuth Association and former director-general of Israel’s Health Ministry, said the new campus would help address a growing national need for rehabilitation and geriatric services.
He said: “The hospital already serves patients from Dan to Eilat, and thanks to the generous donation of the Jusidman family philanthropic foundation, we will be able to increase the number of rehabilitation and geriatric patients in Israel and improve their hospitalisation conditions to a considerable extent.”
Ash added that Reuth was continuing discussions with the Israeli government regarding additional support for the project.
The hospital will be built as part of a wider development in Sde Dov, with plans also including a neighbouring public housing complex containing around 250 homes.
