New genetic study lifts the lid on Hitler’s underdeveloped genitals
It turns out he really did only have one ball – although rumours about the other languishing in the Albert Hall remain unconfirmed
Adolf Hitler unleashed a world war with a micro-penis and a single functioning testicle, according to a new genetic analysis that claims the Nazi dictator suffered from a disorder linked to stunted sexual development.
The documentary, Hitler’s DNA: Blueprint of a Dictator, airing on Channel 4 on Saturday night, sets out the first attempt to decode the Führer’s genetic make-up. The findings suggest he had Kallmann syndrome, a condition known to delay or blunt puberty, often resulting in underdeveloped genitalia.
The same study knocks down a century of rumour over Hitler’s supposed Jewish ancestry. Not a trace of it was found.
The research team, led by a British geneticist, say Hitler’s DNA also carries markers associated with autism, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, though they stress these genes prove nothing on their own and should not be used to smear the millions of people who live peacefully with such conditions.
One of the experts interviewed, the psychologist Simon Baron-Cohen, warns against crude determinism. As he tells the film-makers, “behaviour is never purely genetic” and linking Hitler’s brutality to modern diagnoses risks stoking stigma rather than insight.
The Times quotes Professor Turi King, lead geneticist on the research, saying: “If he was to look at his own genetic results, he would almost certainly have sent himself to the gas chambers.”
Speculation about Hitler’s family tree has been around as long as his name. In 1933, a paper loyal to Austria’s anti-Nazi chancellor dared Berlin to disprove the rumours. The myth resurfaced again in 2022 when Russia’s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, tried to justify the invasion of Ukraine by claiming Hitler had Jewish roots. He went on to add that “the biggest antisemites are Jewish themselves,” a remark that was widely condemned.
Earlier attempts to trace Hitler’s lineage through distant relatives had thrown up tantalising hints of links to groups he sought to wipe out. But this latest work, drawn from what is believed to be Hitler’s own blood, points firmly to straightforward Austrian German ancestry.
That blood comes from a swatch of sofa fabric seized by a US soldier from the Berlin bunker where Hitler killed himself. Scientists verified the sample by matching it to DNA from known relatives.
The result is a portrait that strips away the mythology and leaves something brutally human: a tyrant whose body was as flawed as the worldview he imposed on millions.
