Finchley community hails 'momentous occasion in our 50-year history'

New North London Synagogue has voted to appoint Rabbi Danny Nevins as its new senior rabbi after a year-long search.

Chairs Vicky Fox and Mark Flenner, said: “This is a momentous occasion in our 50-year history. Our members recognised his wonderful combination of warmth and curiosity, intellect and Jewish scholarship, deep connection to Israel, and commitment to the continued diversity of our services and community. We are delighted to be welcoming Rabbi Nevins.”

Rabbi Jonathan Wittenberg, in post for 38 years, announced in December 2024 that he intended to retire.

Rabbi Danny Nevins said: “I am thrilled to be joining NNLS as the new Senior Rabbi and am deeply grateful for the confidence placed in me by the recruitment steering group, council and the community. Throughout this process, I have been genuinely moved by the energy, diversity and generosity of spirit that defines NNLS.”

Rabbi Nevins was ordained by the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York. He holds an MA in Jewish studies from JTS and a bachelor’s degree in Middle Eastern history from Harvard University. He has led three Jewish organisations: Golda Och Academy in West Orange, New Jersey, as Head of School; JTS as Pearl Resnick Dean of the Rabbinical School and Adat Shalom Synagogue in Farmington Hills, Michigan, as senior rabbi.

He is expected to start in the summer.
