Police apologise for tweet of men in Nazi uniforms
The force in Greater Manchester said sorry for the 'unacceptable' post which drew anger from an Orthodox Twitter user
Complaints from a Shomrim volunteer in Stamford Hill have prompted an apology from Greater Manchester Police, after the force posted an image of two men dressed in Nazi uniforms on its road traffic Twitter account.
Shulem Stern responded online to the image, which was posted on Sunday, tweeting: “Two guys dressed in SS uniform tweeted by official @gmpolice account. Not right.”
The original tweet, which was quickly removed, was captioned: “M62 J22 on the west Yorkshire border. These two likely lads trying to invade.”
Police chiefs were not amused, however, and Stern later re-tweeted their apology, in which they said: “We will speak to those involved.”
A spokesman for the force later added: “A tweet was posted on a GMP local social media account on Sunday 7 August 2016, which caused offence to a number of people. This post was deleted as soon as were made aware of it and we apologise for its content, as it was unacceptable. This matter has been referred to GMP’s Professional Standards Branch.”
