Sadiq Khan to address Sunday's main Yom HaShoah commemoration

London mayor to attend Barnet Copthall Stadium for second successive year, having made it his first official event following his election.

Sadiq Khan is to address thousands of people at the community’s central Yom HaShoah commemoration this weekend.

It will be the second successive year that the mayor of London has attended the event at Barnet Copthall Stadium, having made it the very first official event following his election last year.

The event will also be addressed by Games Of Thrones actress Laura Pradelska, who will detail her grandmother’s story of surving the Holocaust, as part of this year’s theme of Women’s Resistance.

Neil Martin, chief executive of Yom HaShoah UK, said: “Yom HaShoah is our day to honour the past and pledge to continue the legacy of survivors and refugees. But it’s also about shaping the future and the mayor’s attendence once again shows how we are all working together to ensure a cohesive and strong society that defiantly says ‘never again’.”

Khan, said: “It is incredibly important that we take time to remember the six million Jewish lives lost in the Holocaust. I attended Yom HaShoah as my first official engagement after being elected Mayor almost one year ago, and I was deeply moved by the accounts of Jewish survivors and refugees who went through these unimaginable horrors. I am honoured to join London’s Jewish community once again this year to reflect on the loss of the victims of the Holocaust, the resilience of the survivors, and why it’s now more important than ever to fight for tolerance, respect and acceptance across all our communities.”
