Sajid Javid: Labour must ‘show it really means it’ on tackling anti-Semitism
Communities minister urges Labour to stand up to racism within the party in response to a question about Holocaust Memorial Day
The Labour Party has to show people it means what it says on combating hate crime, Sajid Javid has said.
The Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government urged parties to speak up against anti-Semitism ahead of Holocaust Memorial Day on Saturday.
During questions to Mr Javid’s department in the Commons, Tory Ranil Jayawardena (North East Hampshire) asked: “With Holocaust Memorial Day this week, does (Mr Javid) agree that on all sides of this House we really need to face up to anti-Semitism wherever we see it, and in whatever form it takes?”
Mr Javid replied: “Holocaust Memorial Day is a reminder for all of us of the horrors of what can happen, when mankind, what we can do to each other, if no-one speaks up.
“And it is incumbent on all parties in this House… I noted just a few days ago the Jewish Labour Movement is appealing to the Labour Party leadership to actually throw out people who allegedly practice anti-Semitism.
“The Labour Party talks about combating hate crime, but it has to show people that it really means it.”
