Zionist Federation choose new President to succeed Eric Moonman
'Progressive' Zionist Estelle Gilston to take over from much-loved former MP in honourary role
The Zionist Federation has chosen a new president after the passing of much-loved former Labour MP Eric Moonman, who died in December.
Estelle Gilston, who represents Pro-Zion, a progressive Zionist organisation, described herself as “a doer” this week, saying she had “very big shoes to fill”.
Liverpool-born Moonman had two stints as a Labour MP in the 60s and 70s and ZF chair Paul Charney said this week that his successor had “stature and drive”.
Gilston said her role will be one of “active and passionate engagement, not simply a title to hold,” adding that she looked forward to working with Charney.
Gilston, who is president of Sha’arei Tsedek synagogue in Whetstone, said should would “build new and strong relationships across all of our partners and beyond”.
She added: “Eric left some very large shoes to fill and I look forward to taking on the role with his voice of reason constantly in my mind.”

Royal Mail issued a stamp honouring Holocaust hero Sir Nicholas Winton after a Jewish News campaign attracted more than 100,000 backers. Jewish Newsalso produces special editions of the paper highlighting pressing issues including mental health and Holocaust remembrance.
