Over 230 cross-party candidates sign pro-Israel pledges ahead of election
The list includes commitments to oppose those who 'challenge Israel ’s right to exist' and support for the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism
More than 230 cross-party candidates have signed a list of pro-Israel pledges ahead of tomorrow’s poll, marking a slight increase since the 2017 election.
As many as 60 were Conservative, followed by 37 from the Labour Party and 48 from the Liberal Democrats, adding up to a total of 233 signatories, compared with 199 candidates in 2017.
Prominent signatories include the Liberal Democrat’s spokesperson on foreign affairs Chuka Umunna, Labour’s shadow communities secretary Andrew Gwynne and Damian Hinds (Conservatives).
Finchley and Golders Green candidates Luciana Berger (Liberal Democrat), Mike Freer (Conservatives) and Ross Houston (Labour), are also signatories.
The pledges, written by the Israel Britain Alliance and We Believe in Israel, include commitments to oppose “the extremists who challenge Israel ’s right to exist” and support those who “genuinely seek to promote and establish a permanent, just and comprehensive peace between Israel and its neighbours.”
Other pledges include support for the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance’s working definition of antisemitism and a vow to encourage trade with Israel.
Luke Akehurst, of We Believe in Israel, said it was “great to see cross-party support from a range of parliamentary candidates for these important pledges about Israel.”
Michael McCann, of the Israel Britain Alliance, said: “This unprecedented grassroots mobilisation means candidates across the UK understand there is public support for Israel and we hope they will reflect this in their contributions and voting in Parliament.”
