Broadcaster expected to reject Labour complaint over shock Panorama episode according to reports
The BBC is expected to dismiss Labour’s complaint over its Panorama episode on antisemitism, reports claim.
The Guardian reported on Thursday that the broadcaster’s highest complaints body has finished investigating concerns raised by Labour and is set to dismiss the complaint.
Jewish News understands Labour will escalate its complaint to the broadcasting regulator Ofcom, alleging a lack of balance and fairness in the episode.
The BBC has not yet announced its decision. A spokesperson for the broadcaster declined to comment when contacted by Jewish News.
The episode, entitled “Is labour Anti-Semitic” and made by veteran documentary maker John Ware, was broadcast in July.
It alleged senior party figures interfered with investigations into antisemitism, singling out the Labour leader’s chief communications adviser Seumas Milne and current general secretary Jennie Formby.
Labour strongly rejected the allegations, submitting a 28-page complaint to the broadcaster.
Speaking to Sky News during a visit to the Durham Miners’ Gala in July, Corbyn claimed there “were many, many inaccuracies in the programme.”
“The programme adopted a pre-determined position on its own website before it was broadcast,” he said.
The BBC defended the episode at the time. “We stand by our journalism and completely reject any accusations of bias or dishonesty. The investigation was not pre-determined, it was driven by the evidence,” a spokesperson said.
“The outcome shows the serious questions facing the Labour Party and its leadership on this issue. The programme adhered to the BBC’s editorial guidelines, including contacting the Labour Party in advance of the broadcast for a full right of reply,” the spokesperson added.
