Former Jewish News writer wins young journalist award
Gabriel Pogrund says he's 'hugely indebted' to those who've helped him develop as a writer after winning the gong at the Press Awards this week
A former Jewish News writer has been awarded Young Journalist of the Year at the Press Awards.
Sunday Times news reporter Gabriel Pogrund pipped five other shortlisted writers to the prestigious prize, awarded by LBC host Nick Ferrari on Tuesday night.
Pogrund, 23, who spent time freelancing with this paper in 2016 and who was listed at number 18 on Jewish News’ Thirty Under 30 list, thanked those who’d helped him develop as a journalist.
He told Jewish News: “I am shocked and overjoyed to have won this award and so very grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given in my career so far, from interviewing space scientists in Israel to spending a weekend on a porn studio in Barcelona.
“I am hugely indebted to the kind and inspiring journalists who have helped me grow and develop as a person and a professional – many of whom sit in the Jewish News news room, which gave me many of my first experiences in the trade.”

Fellow Jewish Times journalist Hugo Rifkind scooped two awards on the night. The writer was handed ‘The Best of Humour Award’ and ‘Critic of the Year for 2017’.
